Stroke Month Wealthy Affiliate Reviews
May is National Stroke Month.
According to the American Stroke Association, an estimated 80% of strokes are preventable.
That means that four out of every five strokes are unnecessary. While elderly people with high blood pressure are most at risk, anyone can have a stroke. Up to a third of strokes occur in people under the age of 65.
Most Americans are not aware of the signs of a stroke. This lack of awareness creates a serious safety risk, as immediate treatment is of the utmost importance.
According to the American Stroke Association, only about eight percent of people surveyed were able to name the four most important signs of a stroke. These signs are abbreviated using the acronym F.A.S.T.
For American Stroke Month in May, the American Stroke Association encourages all Americans to get the “Spot a Stroke F.A.S.T.” app and learn the signs of a stroke.
Teaching yourself to recognize the signs of a stroke should be considered as significant as learning CPR or what to do when a fire occurs. When someone has a stroke, every second counts, just as it does during a fire or heart attack.
F.A.S.T. stands for:
- Face drooping. Is one side of the face numb or drooping? Try and get the person to smile.
- Arm weakness. Is an arm numb or weak? Get the person to raise both of their arms at once. Does one of them fall lower than the other?
- Speech difficulty. Is speech slurred, do they find themselves unable to talk, or do you have difficulty understanding them? Ask them to say a simple sentence such as “the grass is green.” Can they repeat it correctly?
- Time to call 9-1-1. If someone shows any of these symptoms for any amount of time, even if they quickly disappear, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Some other signs of a stroke include extreme headaches that appear with no other known cause, sudden vision problems with one or both eyes, or sudden confusion.
It’s important that people know how to recognize the signs of a stroke so that they can respond right away.
“Spot a Stroke F.A.S.T.” is a free app for Android and iOS. Available in English and also in Spanish, it includes a high blood pressure chart, quiz about stroke warning signs, and a map of American Stroke Association recognized hospitals.
Stroke is the number one cause of permanent disability and the fifth leading cause of death in the nation.
Because of the prevalence of strokes and their ability to have lasting, debilitating impacts on people’s health, many nonprofit organizations have sprung up around the country dedicated to assisting those who have suffered a stroke.
